The City of Independence is accepting applications from residents interested in serving on the city’s parks commission or planning commission. Applications must be submitted by noon Wednesday, Feb. 17.
• The planning commission conducts public hearings and makes recommendations to the city council concerning land use issues including zoning, ordinance amendments, subdivisions, and variances.
The planning commission meets the second Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m.
There is one position available for a three-year term, beginning March 2010.
• The parks commission makes recommendations to the city council concerning current and future needs in the areas of parks, trails, recreational facilities, and activities.
The parks commission is also active in planning and promoting the annual fall Heritage Fest at Pioneer Creek Park the second Saturday of September.
The parks commission meets the first Thursday of each month at 7 p.m.
There are four positions available, beginning March 2010.

The applications will be reviewed at the city council meeting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23.
