McLEOD COUNTY, MN – The H1N1 vaccine is now available by appointment for established Hutchinson Medical Center (HMC) patients. Because of limited quantities, not everyone is eligible for the vaccine at this time.
The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Minnesota Department of Health recommend the vaccine for the following groups:
• Pregnant women
• Health care workers
• Children ages 6 months to 5 years old
• People who live with or care for children under the age of 6 months
• Children 5 years to 18 years with certain chronic health problems
People who are under age 50 and fit one of the above categories may contact HMC to request the vaccine. HMC will review patients’ medical histories to determine if they qualify to receive the vaccine. Patients will be notified if they are eligible once the review is complete. The H1N1 vaccine is different than the seasonal flu vaccine, which is not expected to protect against the H1N1 flu.
According to the Minnesota Department of Health, there are simple ways to prevent the spread of H1N1. Coughing and sneezing into a tissue and frequent hand washing can help prevent germs from spreading. People who are sick should stay home from work and school.
Flu symptoms can include fever (higher than 100° F), cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue. Some people may also have vomiting and diarrhea. Those with flu-like symptoms are encouraged to call the new Minnesota FluLine, which went into service Wednesday. The toll-free number is 866-259-4655. Nurses who answer the calls evaluate health concerns and discuss treatment options.
To schedule an appointment to receive the H1N1 vaccine, call Hutchinson Medical Center at (320) 234-3290 or call toll free at 800-944-2690.
