KNOXVILLE, TN – After earning second place and the DaVinci Award at the 2017 Destination Imagination Global Finals, the Sugar Packets from Delano High School took first place in the technical challenge at the high school level during the 2018 event.
The technical challenge prompts students to complete tasks by using engineering research and strategic planning. For this challenge, the team was tasked with designing and building a maze traveler that would navigate a randomly selected maze. They were asked to create a prop that would transform within the maze, as well as to remove an object from the maze using their maze traveler. All this was completed while the team presented a story about the maze traveler’s journey and what happens along the way.
Students Annabel Frake, Nicole Pupp, and Gretchen Wuerger make up the Sugar Packets. Brian Frake, and Ben and Kristina Pupp are team managers.
They competed at the annual event in Knoxville, TN, from May 23 to 26.
Known as the “world’s largest celebration of creativity,” the event drew more than 1,400 teams from 45 states and at least 14 countries, including Australia, China, Canada, and Mexico. More than 17,000 people gathered for closing ceremonies to award the top teams in the world for their work in solving a series of STEAM-based challenges. STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, arts, and math.
Another Delano team, the Cookie Lovers, competed at the event and placed 19th in the Middle School level Technical Challenge.
