Delano man found hiding under a bed admits to burglary spree

CARVER, WRIGHT COUNTIES, MN – A convicted felon, found by the cops hiding under a bed, has admitted swiping vehicles, kiddie DVDs, spare change, jewelry, and booze from homes in or near Watertown during a two-week burglary spree last fall, the Star Tribune reported.

Joshua D. Smith, 25, of Delano, in a negotiated guilty plea, was sentenced Wednesday by Carver County District Judge Michael Baxter to three years and two months in prison for four of the burglaries.

Baxter also ordered Smith to pay a $1,000 fine and restitution to all of the victims listed in the charges.

Smith was arrested at a home in Minnetonka, where officers spotted his legs sticking out from under a bed, the Star Tribune reported.

Additional cases are pending in Wright and Hennepin counties against Smith, who has served prison time in Minnesota for aggravated forgery and theft.

Smith was initially charged with eight counts of second-degree burglary for crimes committed in Watertown and Waconia from Sept. 25 to Oct. 7, 2009.
