Tom Emmer is endorsed by Republicans

emState Rep. Tom Emmer of Delano has been officially endorsed by the Republican Party as a candidate for Minnesota governor.

Previously, delegates to the party’s state convention in Minneapolis gave 53 percent of their first ballots to Emmer and 43 percent to Seifert, with other candidates splitting the rest. It takes  at least 60 percent of the 1,988 voting delegates to win endorsement.

Marty Seifert has vowed to leave the race instead of moving on to an August primary, which will offer a three-way Democratic race. Continue reading ‘Tom Emmer is endorsed by Republicans’

Final stages of construction underway in Loretto

Loretto is gearing up for the final touches of construction on  the bike path that runs through the heart of town.
Loretto Public Works Director Jeff Leuer said the walkway entrance from the Ponds onto Hennepin County Road 19 (just the area in the county right-of-way) was ripped up, realigned, new pavement placed down, and a crosswalk was painted on the roadway to just south of Elsen Street.
“Please remind anyone using the crosswalk that they need to check for vehicles prior to crossing the road,” Leuer said. “I have noticed people/bikers walking/crossing onto the roadway with no regard to where a vehicle traveling at the posted speed is, in relation to the crosswalk. We just want everyone to be careful and observant.”
Last Thursday, crews were to begin milling – grinding up the asphalt with a machine on-site and hauling the material away two to three inches of the asphalt, which will make it rutty – similar to the turn lane by Highway 55 from Railway Street to Elsen Street.
There will be traffic control in the area during this phase, Leuer noted. This will involve flagmen reducing traffic to one lane in order to complete the work.
Crews anticipated the start time to be 8 a.m. on Thursday, April 29 and completion Friday, April 30 at 5 p.m. It will remain in this condition for approximately one week.
Moving forward, contractors will be installing the center median Tuesday in the form of concrete 60’ on both sides of the railroad tracks on Hennepin County 19.
“This again is for anticipation of meeting future requirements to become a whistle free zone in regards to trains, although there are no guarantees on that,” Leuer said.
The medians have to be 8” in height to make this requirement after the asphalt is laid down. Again, traffic control will be in place reducing to one lane.
Also next week, blacktop on the bike path in Medina (from Highway 55 to the northern city limits of Loretto and the southern city limits to Maple Street) will begin.
Street overlays will take place beginning Friday, May 7 on Hennepin County Road 19 from Railway Street to Elsen Street. An overlay of the remainder of Hennepin County Road 19 from Highway 55 to Hennepin County Road 11 – omitting the new part from Railway Street to Elsen Street – is scheduled to be completed mid-summer in a separate project from the bike path.
Leuer also noted property owners that had sod placed on their property last fall are now responsible for the watering.
For more information, contact Leuer at (763) 479-4305 or e-mail jleuer@ci.loretto.mn.us or Cindy Patnode at cpatnode@ci.loretto.mn.us.
The city also noted to keep in mind that all dates are contingent on the weather and any rain could have an impact on the timing.
