One cop fired, another suspended in Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, MN — A police officer has been fired and another suspended for one week without pay in Hutchinson over unrelated circumstances, reported WCCO.

Officer Shelly Schmidt was a probationary officer and was told Friday she was fired, according to Hutchinson Police Chief Dan Hatten. While off duty, Schmidt was convicted of trespassing in a field as a passenger in a vehicle, Hatten told WCCO.  The radio station KDUZ further noted that the vehicle was Schmidt’s vehicle.  More details about the circumstances are reported by KDUZ. Welcome reception set for Queen of the Lakes Alex Forster in Delano Thursday, Oct. 8

The Delano Royalty Committee has planned a welcome reception for former Miss Delano Alex Forster, Queen of the Lakes Thursday, Oct. 8 from 6-8 p.m. at the council chambers at the Delano City Hall. The event will be a social hour with bars and refreshments. All are welcome to come congratulate her and chat with her about her experiences thus far!

Hwy. 12 expected open in Delano Tuesday, Oct. 6; celebration planned Oct. 10

At Tuesday morning’s Delano Area Chamber of Commerce Highway 12 Task Force meeting, Delano City Administrator Phil Kern told those present that the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) plans to open Highway 12 in Delano Tuesday, Oct. 6 to through-traffic.

Kern said, right now, the project completion depends on how quick crews can install the stoplight at the intersection of Highway 12 and Bridge Avenue. The last layer of bituminous also needs to be laid yet, along with the striping of the roadway, which will take place Friday and Monday. Kern said some of the streetlights will not yet be up Oct. 6, but said the roadway will be completed and opened to traffic.

A “When the West Was Done” celebration is set to take place Saturday, Oct. 10 from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. featuring live music by Silverado. This is a rain or shine event, with a ribbon cutting set for 6 p.m. near the lot of the Delano American Legion, and the music starts at 7 p.m. Food and beverages will be available from the Delano American Legion, Dave’s Town Club, Juke Box, and Three Crows. A “Gateway Celebration” 5K run is also set to take place in conjunction with the event, with the line-up starting at 5 p.m. and the run beginning at 5:15 p.m. It starts and ends at the intersection of Bridge Avenue and River Street. Fall hotdish supper Saturday, Oct 10 at Montrose Community Center

A fall hotdish supper will take place Saturday, Oct. 10 from 4:30-7 p.m. at the Montrose Community Center. All-you-can-eat appetizers, salads, hotdishes, desserts, and beverage. Music by Wagon Wheelers. Hosted by Montrose United Methodist Church.

DAEF informational meeting Monday, Oct. 12 at Three Crows

The Delano Area Educational Foundation (DAEF) is a non-profit organization led by a group of volunteers. Its mission is to enrich the learning experiences of all students in District 879 by helping them achieve academic excellence. In April 2009, the foundation awarded $26,050 in grant money to the Delano schools. Additionally, its endowment now exceeds $35,000.
The board of the foundation would like to extend an invitation to all parents and community members to attend an Informational Gathering at the Three Crows Monday, Oct. 12 from 7 to 9 p.m.  Come join us for refreshments, light snacks, and hear the current board members describe their experience on DAEF’s Board.  You will learn about the opportunities available on the board, as well as other opportunities to volunteer on the committees for one of semi-annual fundraising events.

This is a perfect opportunity for fun, energetic, creative people who are interested in putting their skills to good use through volunteerism.

Loretto Business Group meeting date changed to Thursday, Oct. 22

The next meeting of the Loretto Business Group has been changed and is now set for Thursday, Oct. 22, at 10 a.m. at the Loretto City Hall. These meetings are open to the public, and anyone with concerns about business in Loretto may attend.
