10th annual Loretto Fun Fest Sept. 19

The 10th annual Loretto Fun Fest will be Saturday, Sept. 19. There will be plenty of new activities as well as old favorites. The bike path grand opening will also take place during the Fun Fest.

Fun Fest activities will take place at the LCAA ball fields, across from the 21st Century Bank on County Rd. 19. New this year will be the Oliver Tractor Club show, starting at 2 p.m. Another new attraction will be the Pair-A-Dice Cruisers Car Club from 2 to 7 p.m. All show car owners are invited to display their cars. There will be plenty of children’s activities at this year’s Fun Fest. Inflatables, games, face painting, concessions, a clown, a petting zoo, and pony rides will offer fun for all.

A men’s softball game, Northside vs. Southside, will be from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

From 4-7 p.m. deliciaous food will available from Axel’s and Detour 19. Loretto Lions bingo, with great prizes will take place from 4-7p.m.

A K-9 demonstration will be at 4:30 p.m.

A helicopter from North Memorial Hospital will be available for tours from 5 to 6 p.m.

The Loretto Fire Department is sponsoring a new attraction called, Cowabunga Bingo. Area police departments will team up against local fire departments for the celebrity softball challenge, starting at 5 p.m.

Fireworks begin at 8 p.m. A DJ will be providing entertainment at the Fun Fest.

In the case of rain, activities will be moved to Saints Peter and Paul Parish Center in Loretto.

Rescue skills class at Buffalo Hospital

The Buffalo Hospital is offering an opportunity to learn rescue skills, including first aid, CPR, and AED use with victims older than age 8.  The heartsaver CPR, AED and First Aid class will be Saturday, Sept. 12 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The fee for the class is $65. The class meets at the Buffalo Hospital Administration Conference Center, located at 303 Caitlin Street in Buffalo.

September is library card sign-up month

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and the Delano Public Library wants to make sure that all children in the community have the smartest card of all– a library card. There’s a lot happening at the Delano Library, and the best part for both children and parents is that it’s all free with a library card. Getting a library card is easy. Stop by the front desk to sign up for a card or get more information. Anyone signing up for a library card will get to enter their name for a drawing to win the book, “Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat,” by Lynne Jonell. If you already have a library card, bring it in and enter the drawing. Entries will be accepted from Tuesday, Sept. 1 through Friday, Sept. 25.

The winner of the  book will also have the opportunity to have the book signed by the author. Lynne Jonell will be at the library Tuesday, Sept. 29 from 7 to 8 p.m.

Directed by Barb Roy and many high school student directors.

Double fatal accident happens in Carver Co.

CARVER CO., MN — A three-vehicle fatal accident took the lives of two people and injured several others today on Highway 212 in Carver County.

Two of three drivers are dead, Sandra Babatz, 45, of Norwood and Juan Olvera, 35, of Sullivan, Texas, following a chain reaction involving a left turn off the highway.

The accident took place as follows:  Driver Gordon Curtiss, 52, of Hutchinson was going eastbound on Highway 212 in a 2007 Kenworth semi truck.  A second driver, Babatz, was also going eastbound, driving a 2003 Pontiac Vibe.  Babatz stopped in the eastbound lane to make a left handed turn off the highway, onto County Road 51 going north.

Curtiss rear-ended Babatz, pushing her into the westbound lane, where she was struck broadside by driver Olvera driving a 1999 Chevrolet K15 pickup.  Olvera was killed, but also had numerous passengers in his vehicle.  The following are in critical condition in the hospital from the Olvera vehicle: Nancy Castillo, 29, of Bird Island, Andira Olvera, 8, of Bird Island, Narley Olvera, 9, of Bird Island, and Galylea, 7, of Bird Island.

Delano school board appoints Lisa Seguin

DELANO, MN — The school board appointed Lisa Seguin to the board this afternoon, from a larger pool of 11 candidates, according to Dr. John Sweet, superintendent of schools.  Previously, the board completed interviews with the applicants Wednesday. At that time, the board voted to continue the meeting to Friday, Aug. 28 at 5 p.m. when it will conducted second interviews to two candidates, Joy Bodin and Lisa Seguin.

Seguin will fill the unexpired term of Sarah Gallagher. She is a project manager for the Technology Services Group at Target Corporation. She and her husband, Mark, have two pre-school aged children.
