Great River Regional Library Updates Website

Great River Regional Library Updates Website

St. Cloud, April 30: 2009 - The Great River Regional Library (GRRL) website, www.griver.org, has been updated and improved as a result of a rebuild that was almost two years in planning and implementation.

“We wanted the website to be more appealing, be easier to use and have more information available,” said Joan Allen, the library’s Information Services Coordinator. The layout has been simplified, and the new website includes news and features about the library in a more streamlined format.

Each of the 32 GRRL branch libraries now has its own web page featuring local news and events. “We want to make the information that’s relevant to a local community easier to find. It will make using the website easier for people who come to our library virtually,” Allen said. “We had a website that was functional, and we’ve kept that functionality. But we also wanted a website that was vibrant, with an updated look that showed libraries are alive and well in the 21st Century, and we have that now.”

The library continues to monitor and adjust its online services mix. The latest addition is the TumbleBooks library, a collection of animated talking picture books available through GRRL online. TumbleBooks takes existing picture books, adds animation, sound, music and narration, and produces an electronic picture book kids can read or listen to from any computer — at home or at the library. It also includes a language learning section with a selection of books in Spanish and French, and enrichment activities to keep reading and learning fun.

An interdepartmental Virtual Services Team of library staff began planning the web redesign in 2007. All of the work was completed in-house, and the team has been increasingly focused on the redesign over the last year.

The central part of the newly designed home page includes regularly updated graphics and news. The most used parts of the website have been organized within links:

LIBRARY CATALOG is the place most visitors want to go. This is where you find books, magazines, DVDs and CDs to check out. It’s also where you check your own library record to know what materials you have checked out, what’s due to be returned, and what is waiting for you at the library. Just enter your library card number and personal identification number to make requests.
LOCATIONS & HOURS provides the address, contact number and open hours information about all 32 libraries in the GRRL system and in your neighborhood.
EVENTS are taking place at area libraries on a frequent basis: storytimes, book clubs, speakers, etc. This link tells you what’s going on at the various branch libraries.
DATABASES are storehouses of online articles and information organized for your convenience. GRRL subscribes to many databases such as Health Reference Center Academic and InfoTrac Student Edition so you can access them from home or at the library. Particularly popular is MnLINK which lets cardholders search the catalogs of libraries across Minnesota and request items from their collections.
SERVICES provides a complete listing of all the services that the GRRL currently provides.
FAQ answers many questions, but if the information you need is not answered here, call your local library or GRRL headquarters at 320-650-2500.
ASK A LIBRARIAN provides information on how to contact a librarian for reference assistance by phone, by email or by instant messaging where you can have a real-time online discussion with the reference librarian answering your question.

Delano Public Schools addresses the swine flu

John M. Sweet, Ed.D.
700 Elm Avenue East, Delano, MN 55328

As you likely are aware, human cases of swine flu (now being called H1N1 Novel Influenza) that
began in Mexico are now spreading world wide including the United States. Each day brings new
information about the virus. The good news is Antiviral medications are available for treatment.
Our school district is monitoring the recent events and the health of our students. We are also in
contact with Wright County Public Health, Minnesota Department of Health and the Minnesota
Department of Education.
As with any infectious disease, we ask that you immediately notify the school if your child is ill.
Good health habits can stop the spread of germs and prevent illnesses. Public Health
recommends:
1. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
2. Stay home from school, work and events when you are sick.
3. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
4. Clean your hands often!
5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
6. Practice other good health habits such as getting plenty of sleep, be physically active,
manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.
If members of your family come down with flu-like symptoms (fever, sore throat, cough,
tiredness, muscle-aches and sometimes vomiting and diarrhea-mainly in children) please call your
medical clinic. More information is available on the Minnesota Department of Health’s website
at www.health.state.mn.us or the Center for Disease Prevention & Control at www.cdc.gov.
This is a rapidly evolving situation. We will stay in touch with our public health agency and we
will alert you if there is any concern within the Delano Public Schools.
